Spring is in the Air in Norfolk

Spring is in the Air in Norfolk

Spring is officially in full bloom in Norfolk! With warmer weather, longer days, and the vaccinations flowing, we are all ready to get out and enjoy everything the Mermaid City has to offer! If you’re looking for ways to enjoy Norfolk in the springtime, here are a few fun ideas.

Catch Local Live Music

One of the best things about spring is that it’s the kickoff to festival season. While we’re still not quite to the point of jam-packed festivals, each weekend there have been more and more socially distanced live music opportunities popping up around Norfolk. Festevents is hosting a free concert series at Town Point Park most weeks, with the next live music being Friday, May 7th. Make sure to grab a lawn chair and get there early! Grain offers live music every Wednesday through Saturday evening, and on Sundays for brunch. Many of the breweries, such as O’Connor and Maker’s Craft are also offering live music on the weekends.

Take A Stroll to Admire the Colors of Spring

There’s something about springtime in Norfolk that creates a new energy you can’t find any other time of year. All the bright, vibrant colors really bring Norfolk to life. One place you are sure to find gorgeous flowers and foliage is at the Norfolk Botanical Garden. I’d highly recommend paying a visit here, especially at this time of year where so much is in bloom. If you’re trying to save a few bucks though or don’t have the time to make the trip, you can find flowers just as beautiful by strolling around your own neighborhood.

Enjoy a Springtime Breeze on a Restaurant Patio

Springtime means it’s patio season! Whether you’re going to happy hour or brunch, sitting outside with a nice breeze and some string lights elevates the experience to a new level. In the downtown area, Leone’s is a great spot for outdoor dining or happy hour. They also have the best charcuterie board I’ve had yet in Norfolk, especially when enjoying it from their rooftop patio overlooking Granby Street. In the Ghent area, enjoy a happy hour glass of wine at Mermaid Winery, swing by new resident on 21st Street, Lil’ Bit NOLA, to sip on a Hurricane.

Pay a Visit to the Farmers Market

Nothing says spring like fresh fruits and vegetables! Norfolk now has several outdoor farmers markets – what better way to support local businesses while still enjoying some sunshine! The newest one is Ghent Farmers Market outside of Blair Middle School on Spotswood Ave, and takes place every first and third Friday from April through September.

Enjoy the Elizabeth River Trail

The Elizabeth River Trail winds throughout a large chunk of Norfolk and has so many things to do along the way. Watch a sunset over the Elizabeth River from many different points along the trail, such as the the Half Moone Cruise Terminal or Plum Point Park. You can also check out one of the newer additions to the trail, the obstacle course!

There’s also so much history to be discovered along the trail. One of my favorite spots is the Armed Forces Memorial in Town Point Park, which includes bronze cast letters with actual notes from soldiers to loved ones.

From patio happy hours to concerts in Town Point Park, there are countless ways to enjoy the beautiful weather in our wonderful city.
