5 Outdoor, Socially Distanced Activities to Enjoy in Norfolk

5 Outdoor, Socially Distanced Activities to Enjoy in Norfolk

Some of my favorite things about Norfolk are the waterfront views and the quaint, historic neighborhoods scattered throughout the city. This winter, I’ve been spending more time outdoors to stay active and healthy, and have gotten to enjoy parts of Norfolk I’ve never fully appreciated in the other seasons. I’ve put together some of the best ways to spend time outside this winter while enjoying the best parts of Norfolk.

Visit the Norfolk Botanical Garden

Norfolk Botanical Gardens

The Norfolk Botanical Garden is a well-known Norfolk staple in spring and summer, but the gardens are open all year long to enjoy. In the winter months, you can check out some of the lesser known foliage that peaks in colder weather while also avoiding the larger crowds that gather in the warmer months. You can check out their list of what’s in bloom during the winter months here.

Walk, Bike or Roller Blade the Elizabeth River Trail

The Elizabeth River Trail winds throughout most of the city of Norfolk, offering many different attractions to see along the way. Starting at Harbor Park and stretching 10.5 miles to the Hermitage Museum and Gardens, chances are you’ll need multiple outings to cover this trail. Most people walk or bike the trail, but my preferred method is by roller blades. There are plenty of long stretches of the trail along the water that are ideal for a blader.

Exploring the Elizabeth River Trail also gives you the best of Norfolk in one stretch, hitting historic sites, beautiful scenic views, the local college, and plenty of coffee shops and restaurants if you need a treat along the way.

Stroll through Ghent

This is by far my favorite thing to do in Norfolk in any season. The houses in Ghent have such charm, and each one is so unique. It doesn’t matter how many times I walk down the same streets, I always see something new. The people out walking are always so friendly and cheerful in the neighborhood. You can’t help but feel happy when strolling through Ghent.

Take Advantage of the Firepits

Firepits are a necessity this year as people choose to spend more time outside to safely socialize. Restaurants such as Torch and Stripers have great firepits to relax by and enjoy a meal. Rooftop bar Grain offers multiple firepits on their outdoor balcony, with panoramic views of the Elizabeth River.

Hang Out in Town Point Park

Waterfront at Town Point Park

Last but not least is Town Point Park. We normally know and love Town Point Park for its seasonal festivals such as the Virginia Wine Festival and Harborfest. But in the winter months, the park is open and free to anyone to enjoy. This is my favorite spot in Norfolk, as it offers wonderful views of the Elizabeth River, especially at sunset. It’s close to downtown, but feels removed enough that you’re no longer in the busyness of the city. You can pack a picnic to enjoy here, play sports, work out, or in my case, even get engaged here.

While we are all anxiously awaiting warmer weather, and for the vaccine to reach everyone so that we can get back to enjoying our favorite parts of our city, for now we can enjoy these simple yet beautiful parts of Norfolk all winter long.
