Best Waterfront Views in Norfolk

Best Waterfront Views in Norfolk

Known as a coastal city, Norfolk boasts some of the best waterfront views in Hampton Roads. Bordered by the Elizabeth River on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, there are endless picturesque waterfront spots throughout the city.

Town Point Park

Probably the most well-known waterfront area in all of Norfolk, and for good reason, is Town Point Park. While this park is best known for it’s many festivals that take place in the warmer months, the park is open year-round for people to enjoy. Whether you’re running along the water or relaxing on a picnic blanket, there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the views.

A lesser-known spot for sunset watching is the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, which has Adirondack chairs on the upper deck that provide a perfect overlook of the Elizabeth River. To elevate your time soaking up the sun, grab an iced coffee from Cure Coffeehouse on your way over.

Another beautiful waterfront view near Town Point Park is next to Nauticus at the USS Wisconsin. It’s especially beautiful at sunset, but you can get picturesque views even on the gloomiest day.

Freemason District

A hidden gem along the water is the Freemason District. Tucked away from the busyness of downtown but right in the heart of Norfolk, the Freemason District has plenty of waterfront views to enjoy.

The Pagoda and its tranquil garden provide a perfect spot to enjoy an afternoon along the water.  This is also one of the most unique spots in the city, offering a peaceful nature garden and coy pond while still keeping the feeling of being downtown.

If you continue along the Elizabeth River Trail, you’ll run into the Freemason Harbor marina, complete with benches for relaxing views of the sailboats.

If you go a little further, you’ll get to the Norfolk Boat Club. I had always thought the Boat Club was most beautiful at sunset, but I recently got to see it in the snow, which was just as stunning.

The Hague Bridge

Another classic place to enjoy views of the water is at the Hague Bridge in Ghent. With beautiful historic houses on one side, and the Chrysler Museum on the other, you can’t beat this view!

Plum Point Park

Tucked away in the Chelsea District of West Ghent, Plum Point Park offers wonderful views of the Elizabeth River. It’s never crowded since it’s more removed than the other areas, providing a tranquil, serene place to soak in the views.

Hermitage Museum and Gardens

Last but not least, the Hermitage Museum, located along the Elizabeth River, boasts one of the best waterfront views of Norfolk. In the spring and summer, the museum hosts Sunsets on the River, where you can enjoy live music and good times while enjoying a perfect view of the sun setting over the river.

While each of these places throughout town feels unique, they all exude that Norfolk charm. Happy viewing!
